Mr Romesh Angunawela

Mr Romesh Angunawela is a full-time consultant eye surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital Private Patients, and works mostly at the hospital’s Arthur Steele Unit. Mr Angunawela is an expert in the treatment of blepharitis, cataracts, corneal grafts and dry eyes. His extensive medical training has made him a specialist in cornea, lens and laser eye surgery. Trained in both corneal and refractive eye surgery fellowships, Mr Angunawela regularly performs a wide range of surgeries at the Moorfields Eye Hospital Private division. He specialises in the following procedures:

• Small incision cataract surgery
• Multifocal lens surgery
• LASIK, LASEK, and trans-PRK laser eye surgeries
• Sight correction through ICL
• Complex corneal Ttansplantation including DMEK for Fuchs’ dystrophy

He earned his medical qualification in 1997 and completed his initial medical training at the University of Southampton. This was followed by his specialist training in ophthalmology at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London and at Moorfields Eye Hospital from 2001 to 2010. He also underwent two and a half years of advanced specialist training in the medical and surgical management of complex corneal and external eye disease, corneal transplantation, cataract surgery and laser refractive eye surgery at Moorfields and with Professor Donald Tan at the Singapore National Eye Centre. Mr Angunawela received his doctorate from the University of London for his dissertation on corneal wound healing after laser eye surgery. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers in various ophthalmic medicine journals. He joined Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2005 and now serves as Director of Corneal Fellowship Training and Director of the Moorfields Lions Eye Bank. He is also an Honourary Clinical Lecturer at University College London (UCL) and the University of London, St. George’s Medical School. Mr Angunawela is a member of the Global Clinic and the Himalayan Vision Project Charities, providing eye care and ophthalmic surgery to communities in a number of developing countries. Memberships:
