Miss Marcela Espinosa-Lagana currently serves as a director and consultant ophthalmic surgeon at Centre for Sight. After finishing her medical education and specialty training in Mexico, she completed her residency in ophthalmology at the University of Gualdalajara in Jalisco. She then undertook fellowship training in cornea and keratorefractive surgery at the prestigious CODET Vision Institute in Tijuana under the mentorship of Dr Arturo Chayet, considered to be one of the best eye surgeons in the world.
After spending some time in the academic field as professor ad-honorem at the University of Costa Rica, she joined Laserlight Inc., a manufacturer of lasers for ophthalmology. There she worked as a medical consultant and adviser, training ophthalmologists in laser eye surgery and collecting data for submission to regulatory authorities.
She moved to the UK in 1998 and in 2003, she worked in Spain as a consultant then underwent further fellowship training in paediatric ophthalmology at the Great Ormond St. Hospital in London.
Miss Espinosa-Lagana is on the General Medical Council‘s registered specialists in the UK, and she is also registered to practise as a specialist in Spain. She is fluent in Spanish and Italian and able to carry out consultations in these languages.
On top of her consultant and surgical work, Miss Espinosa-Lagana has also written or co-authored several studies for various respected journals in the field of ophthalmology and laser eye surgery.
At Centre for Sight, Miss Espinosa-Lagana leads several investigative projects and monitors the outcomes of refractive surgery. She’s also in charge of educating the nursing staff and ensures that high standards are maintained. She is well known as incredibly professional and courteous among her satisfied patients who have said that she put their minds at ease before, during, and after the surgery. Her caring manner, skills and professionalism have been commended by numerous reviewers.
