Mr Ali Mearza FRCOphth is a cornea, cataract and laser eye surgeon based in London and also the Clinical Director of ophthalmology at London’s Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He completed his medical training at the Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School in 1996 and a year’s fellowship at Moorfields NHS Trust followed in cornea and external eye disease. He subsequently visited the Emmetropia Mediterranean Eye Institute in Crete for an additional one year fellowship.
Mr Ali Mearza became a consultant in 2007 where he began work on the sub-specialty corneal service at Imperial NHS Trust. He now runs his private practice from the Harley Street area of London, and continues to work as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon as well as Clinical Director of ophthalmology services at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in West London.
Mr Ali Mearza regularly presents his cases and results to other surgeons and clinicians at conferences and meetings around the World and has produced over 30 peer reviewed publications. In addition to research, Mr Mearza is actively involved in charitable eye foundations and treatments. and travels regularly to help those suffering from poor eye sight in developing countries. This involves giving people back their sight where cataracts may have developed and are usually untreatable. To date, his charity work has taken him to Bangladesh, Ghana, Indonesia, Madagascar and Burma with a trip to Cambodia planned for later this year.
Mr Mearza is a member of the European and UK Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, International Society of Refractive Surgeons and the American Academy of Ophthalmologists. Having recently undergone his own laser eye surgery using the same laser equipment and technology that he uses to treat his own patients Mr Mearza is now able to provide a unique perspective on the treatment from the patient point of view.
